Teachers, mental health therapists, physicians, school and camp administrators, police officers, social workers, firefighters, health care workers, paramedics, foster parents, medical examiners and clergy are required by California law to report child abuse and neglect to law enforcement and social services agencies within 36 hours after they first suspect abuse or neglect.
The California Legislature decided to expand this list since they believe there is a lot of abuse and neglect that is not reported. Starting January 1, 2021, human resources employees who work at companies with at least five employees, and also employ minors, must now become mandated reporters for child abuse and neglect. Human resources workers affected by the law will need to complete training.
