Slavery stains the history of the United States and California. National debate frequently discusses reparations to the families of slaves for the harms done to their forefathers. However, California legislators seem to believe they can come up with an equitable solution.
Although there has yet to be any action to provide reparations, AB 3121 tasks the state to create a commission that will study the possibility of paying reparations for slavery. The task force will be appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, the speaker of the
Assembly and the State Senate leader and will meet before June 2021 to study the issue to create proposals for possible implementation.
