You would think with Governor Newsom setting a goal to phase out gasoline power vehicles in California by 2035 that the purge had already started. However, the unavailability of 2021 Chevy Camaro SS, 1LE, and ZL1 Model automobiles in California has nothing to do with Governor Newsom and everything to do with former Governor Schwarzenegger.
In 2010 Governor Schwarzenegger signed a law intending to phase out heavy metals in brake pads. The law stipulated that by 2021 vehicle manufacturers cannot make brake pads with more than 5% copper material. As a result, according to Car and Driver, Chevrolet will no longer sell the 2021 Camaro SS, 1LE, and ZL1 models in California because they use pads with more than the permitted amount of copper.
